Maminot held the head of his barony at Deptford [37] [38] and according to John Lyon writing in , he built himself a castle, or castellated mansion at Deptford, of which all traces had by then long since been buried in their ruins, but from the remains of some ancient foundations which had been discovered the site was probably on the brow of Broomfield, near the Mast Dock and adjacent to Sayes Court. Much of this riverside estate is populated by the former Naval Dockyards, now known as Convoys Wharf , the Pepys Estate and some eastern fringes of the old Surrey Commercial Docks. The name Deptford — anciently written Depeford meaning “deep ford ” [15] — is derived from the place where the road from London to Dover , the ancient Watling Street now the A2 , crosses the River Ravensbourne at the site of what became Deptford Bridge at Deptford Broadway. The Ravensbourne crosses under the A2 at roughly the same spot as the DLR crosses over; and at the point where it becomes tidal, just after Lewisham College , it is known as Deptford Creek, and flows into the River Thames at Greenwich Reach. It was transferred to the County of London in and became part of Greater London in The area was split in This will involve the construction of around 3, new homes and an extension of the town centre northwards towards the river. Aragon Tower on the Pepys Estate was sold by Lewisham Borough to fund regeneration plans for the estate; the award-winning refurbishment into privately owned accommodation was featured in the BBC1 documentary, “The Tower”. It was burnt down in , but rebuilt on Douglas Way, with Prince Charles laying the foundation stone, and Diana, Princess of Wales opening it in It was purchased by Goldsmiths College in

11th (Lonsdale Battalion) Border Regiment Cap Badge From the same family as the other example listed. This one appears to be in bronzed brass; I am quite sure this is a deliberate patination rather than a natural age-induced toning (compare the two badges side-by-side as illustrated).

The pair are seen waddling through a tower block before the boy shoots a woman in the head at point blank range. Coming just weeks after Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson was forced to apologise for apparently mumbling the N-word during an outtake, the sketches are likely to further inflame tensions over what the BBC puts on air.

The Story Of The Twos, which will be shown at 9pm on Sunday May 25, is expected to be watched by millions of families. All the Swedish programmes, they always have a Muslim. Why is there a Muslim in them? Last night, media standards campaigner Pippa Smith, of the group Safermedia, said Enfield risked stoking ethnic tensions with his comedy. Harry Enfield is no longer funny and the BBC has lost the plot.

In , cc machines were the biggest that young whippersnappers could ride as learners without passing their test. The good news was that it handled beautifully, courtesy of the Harris frame, had reasonably satisfying get up and go, and looked and sounded great. The bad news was that without the balancer shaft which Enfield later fitted to the cc single Himalayan, it was so vibey at over 65mph that your hands went numb and dropped off, and objects in the mirror looked like extras in that well known B-movie The Blob from Planet Zog.

Well, farewell to all that — the latest machine to bear the name Continental GT is the greatest by far. With the average age of Enfield owners in India 27 and dropping, it could be just the machine to reduce the average age of a UK biker from and-a-half.

We endeavour to include sub-calibre equipments associated with the rifles represented on-site, because these relate to the training theme; and the Boys Anti-Tank Rifle above all others certainly required sub-calibre adaptors, particularly because ranges on which such a rifle could safely be fired have always been comparatively small in number, even in war-time.

The rifle shown below is of B. For comparison, it is photographed alongside a Canadian C. Stood to the right are both a.

The paint is in superb original condition, with transfers intact; it is a very well-built bicycle, of a marque with a reputation for quality; it sports the extra options available in its catalogue; and it retains its original fittings. A Runwell is quite rare to find these days, and this is a handsome machine. Some factories were bombed during the War; the records of others were lost after they ceased trading or were taken over by other companies.

Some did not have sequential frame-numbering. The more popular marques now have specialists who have compiled records as far as they can from bicycles still in existence. Runwell does not fall into any of those categories. There are a few aids to dating a bike, such as nickel-plated handlebars, which were used until the late twenties. But otherwise catalogues are the standard way to date a bicycle. The Runwell catalogue describes this particular bike very well, so I think it is probably very close to that year.

This one does not have an open centre metal gear case, as per the catalogue.

While Enfield did not simply take two cylinders from the Bullet single and attach them to the twin bottom end. It was necessary to undertake considerable work to the engine internals and the Meteor chassis. The Meteor was expected to appeal to the sidecar market. It weighed a little over lb in solo trim.

Meet the four builders who are rewriting the rules of how your motorcycle should look. The mods included a British racing green paint job, suede and leather accents and a drag-racing handle bar. The most unconventional bit, though, was a floating petrol tank with the chassis brought above it. You can find details of the installation in my guide here. The old Lucas and new DVR2 voltage regulators One feature of this regulator is that it can give a selectable 6v or 12v output from a standard 6v Lucas dynamo, so this gave me the opportunity to convert to 12 volt electrics with just some simple rewiring and changing a few bulbs. At least not for the time being anyway. Step 1 — Selecting the 12 volt parts I just need to borrow a few bits The first step is obviously to get some new 12 volt parts for your bike — mainly bulbs and a battery.

I decided to leave my existing 6 volt horn in place as that should work fine on 12 volts at least for a while! If you have the original Lucas unit you might want to swap it though to avoid damage. Therefore my other bike a Royal Enfield Bullet provided a useful temporary donor for bulbs and battery.
